San Jose Downtown Association San Jose Downtown Parking

Parking and Driving Tips

With more than 21,000 parking spaces in clean, well-lit lots and garages, it is easy to find off-street parking in downtown San Jose.

TIP: Many streets have pedestrian traffic, so drive at a safe speed.
TIP: Some streets are one-way, and turns may be restricted at intersections traversed by the VTA Light Rail, so observe traffic signs.
TIP: Don't be surprised in many garages to find that you will drive on the lefthand side of the ramps instead of the right. Watch for and follow the signs.
TIP: All lots and garages are well-marked with entry and exit signs. Pay close attention for the best way to enter and exit a garage.
TIP: Parking compliance officers frequently patrol downtown streets in an effort to encourage turnover of premium on-street parking spaces.
TIP: If you park on-street, knowing where you parked your car and paying attention to nearby parking signs for time limits can help you avoid a parking citation.
TIP: Most metered spaces are free everyday after 6 p.m. and all day Sundays and holidays, except near the arena. Check nearby parking signs just to be sure.
TIP: Carefully read all signs explaining parking restrictions. Several residential permit parking areas on downtown's perimeter are enforced around the clock.
